Emtee – “LOGAN” Album Review

Here’s our review of SA Hip Hop star, Emtee’s newest album “Logan”.

The SA Hip Hop industry got a thrill over the weekend when rapper, Emtee finally dropped his album “Logan”. Fans had anticipated the album’s releases for quite a while before it dropped. The album was finally released on Friday, April 9, 2021. Since its release, social media has been flooded with positive reactions from fans and SA Hip Hop lovers.

Speaking about the album, the rapper revealed that he stayed true to his identity on it. Of course, that was very well expected from him; it’s his thing. While recording the album, he recalls that he “got to a point where I needed to focus and just see who has my best interests at heart, and I didn’t look too far because of the love I get at home,”

The new album “Logan” is named after his second son. “Avery” was named after the first. In the record, he is heard saying he “had to do it for Logan this time“. As usual, he stays true to his biggest influences being family, love, and life. It is also quite obvious that he has matured into a more confident rapper since “Avery”. His artistry is still mind blowing, and he lets it shine in the entire project.

As is known about him, Em is very much honest in this new project. Even when he’s rapping about all that he is and can do, he still maintains a relatable level of vulnerability, voicing the things that get to him the most. That exactly is what makes him more relatable than most rappers.

The beauty of “Logan” isn’t only that it shines a new light on the rapper’s growth as an artist, but also his growth as a family man. We get to see/hear what he is like as a father. In beginning tracks like “Logan” and “Long Way”, he talks about his children, his relationship with them, and how he teaches them to be disciplined men. In “Long Way” (best track on the project) The Hustla talks about his wife. He also opens up about trying to be a better man for her.

He reveals the conversations he has with his kids, and how he trains them on the ways to treat a woman. This would be a great jam for a father and son to vibe to. The track “Family” also proves how much family means to him. He sings “we laugh together, cry together, live life together“. Indeed, there is no Emtee without his wife and kids.

Em packs thrilling messages of motivation focusing more on self. While he may hype himself and his impact in virtually every song on the album, he also talks about pushing on even when it’s the hardest. That’s the beauty of his craft. He has no problems talking about his fears, how they have affected him, and also how he cannot succumb to them. “Pressure” and “Revolutionary” see him talk about how he cannot succumb to the depression, stress and pressure that comes from what he does. We don’t know a more impactful motivational message than this.

You have to also give it up for him for being the king of hooks. While we heard songs including “Wave”, “Brand New Day”, “Johustleburg”, and “iThemba” before, the album is laced with hooks and refrains that are easy to remember. “Long Way” particularly makes you want to sing along even after hearing it once. It is undeniably one of the best songs on the album. This isn’t just because of its message, but also because it’s such a vibe. We also can’t ignore the Raggaeton vibe he starts out with on “Revolutionary”. It makes you want to buss a move. Nah, we wouldn’t blame you if you did.

Five artistes including Gwamba, Lolli Native, Moozlie, Flash Ikumkani, and J-Smash contribute to the project. Of course, if you’re riding with Em on his album, you’ve got to deliver. They really do that. Each artiste matches the rapper’s energy and delivers an equally respectable performance as much as he does.

In all honesty, “Logan” feels more like a family record. Emtee sticks to storytelling which has always been his greatest strength. He lets his everyday life as a father, a husband, a superstar, and a die hard rapper inspire the project. He focuses on both his strengths and weaknesses, baring them for all to see. Indeed, no one does it better than him, and “Logan” proves how much of a threat he is in the SA music industry.
